Entry #2: Music Mania Downloads

It seems that everyone these days has an iPod or mp3 to listen to. But where do they get the music to put on their music players? Simple. They download it. Some people may think well hey, downloading is stealing. But don't you think it’s justified? I mean, people have to pay for everything else in their lives. Why not give them something for free? Besides, these celebrities have all the money they could ever want. But they don’t do anything to give back to society. Sure, they help raise money for charities, but they never actually make a donation. And it's not like they’re losing anything. They’re still getting the publicity they want. Some parents don't even allow their children to download anything because it is "illegal."
When you buy a CD, you might only like a few songs off the album. So paying for the whole CD just to listen to a few songs would be a waste of money. Downloading is just the faster way to get the music you want. And if it really was illegal, the police would be cracking down on it a lot more wouldn’t they? But that's assuming that they will actually do their jobs for once.
Now, let's talk about software and software packages. All these products are so incredibly expensive. The creators should know that people would rather download it for free rather than have to pay a ridiculous price. If they actually cared that people download, they would lower their prices so that we could pay for their products. That way they would actually make money. The truth is, these people expect that we will download their merchandise. They just want something to complain about.
Hmmm, how do I feel about downloading for free? I don’t have any problem with it. I think it's fine. These celebrities have loads of money already. Why not let people save their's? If you can get something with just one click of a mouse, wouldn't you rather do that instead of having to go all the way to the mall? Besides, you'd be saving the environment by not driving your car.

I don't really think of downloading as stealing either (I doubt that a good number of everybody else does, too). If anything, it gives an artist more exposure. When people download songs, their friends are bound to find out about them, right? I know I always exchange music I download with other people.

One thing I need to bring up though is how most of the profit from CDs go to the record labels (the major ones, anyway) - another reason not to buy CDs all of the time. I'm not sure about iTunes, but it's pretty messed up for the CDs, for sure. It's more of the record labels complaining. If the artists complain, they're just really crazy about the money...

One example of a band that supports downloading is Linkin Park. Mike Shinoda had once said that they don't mind downloading at all. Why? Because downloading has given then more exposure, and downloading allows even more people to enjoy their music. They've definitely paid off. I agree 100% with Mike.

So anyways, I think downloading is cool. People should find other ways to support the band, though. For example, sometimes when I don't get the CD, at least I'll buy some of their official merch, and make sure they get something back. They do need some money for touring and stuff, y'know? Why else do certain artists 'sell-out'? Lack of money, of course! But I won't get into that right now. Plus it's more of a problem for the little indie/non-mainstream bands we know and love!
