Entry #6: Ec(h)o...

The Mary Ward Art Show has always been one of the biggest events at school. Everyone always buys a ticket, and everyone always goes. It’s like one of those things that you absolutely cannot miss. I think it’s even bigger than the annual play. This year's show was called Eco or Echo. All art students made pieces of art that were either made out of eco-friendly materials, or delivered an eco-friendly message. I actually had my pieces (not only for media) displayed in the show this year, and I must say, they turned out a lot better than I thought they would. I didn’t get a chance to sign up for security in media, but I did do security for design. Although I probably spent at least 12 hours doing security altogether, it was actually pretty fun for me. I didn’t take art in grade nine so I've never experienced doing security before. I signed up with my friends so that I wouldn’t be completely bored out of my mind and it was also an easy way of getting quest units, which helped me finish my course. Also, having the live music there kind of took my mind off of the boring aspect of doing security.
Now, let me tell you a story. So in design, we made these chairs made out of cardboard that visiting students were not allowed to sit in. The tour guide people were supposed to remind them not to sit in the chairs so I guess these students forgot to tell them. So when the students from other schools came, one of them asked their own teacher-supervisor if he could sit in the chair. Now this particular person clearly did not care for others' artwork and carelessly told him that he could, without asking security. So I walk past and the kid is just about to sit in the chair. Before he sits down, I tell him that he’s not allowed to sit in it. So he gets up, loses his balance, and crushes the cardboard wall behind him, and almost knocks over the chair. It was tragic. He almost destroyed everything. And also I think this was in the middle of week, so it stayed like that for the rest of the week. Fortunately the damage wasn’t too bad, and no one really noticed.
Overall, my first experience of being in the art show was great, and I can’t wait for next year. This year was great and I hope that the art show next year will be even better.

Entry #5: Are You a Right Clicka or an iBook Flippa?

So, as you probably (and most likely) already know, there has been an on-going battle between the Mac and PC. The makers of the Mac have made several commercials that show why the Mac is better than the PC. Personally, I prefer the PC, but maybe it’s because I’ve never used a Mac before. This is probably why I think that getting a PC would be a better deal than getting a Mac.
The Mac is specifically designed to be used as a media tool, to work on creative things such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Whereas the PC is compatible with all programs except for the ones that are made only for Macs. Maybe it’s not as professional, but it certainly does the job.
Macs are glossy and can be either black or white in colour. I don’t think this is a very good thing to have because it will get dirty very easily. No matter how well you take care of your laptop, it will eventually get dirty. The grease from your fingers will make the cover very uncomfortable to touch, and will not be easy to clean.

The Macbook Air is so thin that it doesn’t even have a CD drive. This means that you have to purchase it separately. The Macbook is already so expensive, and so I think its safe to say that the CD drive will be at least a third of the price of the actual laptop. All these costs will eventually add up, and then you'll realize that instead of buying one Macbook Air, you could’ve gotten two PC’s. I think the Macbook is a waste of money just because you have to buy all the peripherals separately.
I believe that the PC is so much better than the Mac mostly because it’s so easy to use, and it’s affordable. These days, all peripherals come standard in PC’s and the ones that don’t are still very affordable. Most software programs are made for PC’s whereas there aren’t many for Macs. This means that people with Macs cannot do a lot of things that PC’s can, and so it isn’t very sensible to get a Mac. Also, because PC's are more widely used, if you have a problem with yours, it's easier to find help. The Mac users will just be left behind in the dust. The PC is very easy to use, and you can do all the things you need to do very quickly because it is very user-friendly.

Entry #4: Facebook and Education...A New Partnership?

So it seems that everybody has Facebook (except for a few select people) these days. It’s become a huge aspect and has a been daily routine in everyone’s life. It’s as if people need to go on it all the time to see what’s happening in their friends' lives instead of just asking them.
So there has been a lot of controversy about whether Facebook can be used for education or just as a social utility. A first-year student at Ryerson University was accused of using the website to help fellow classmates cheat on assignments and tests. I think this situation is really silly. Using this site is just like tutoring, or using a textbook. The information is paraphrased in a way so that the person is able to understand the material very easily. The student is definitely in the right. He is doing his assignments and handing them in on time. That’s the only thing that professors should be worrying about. Besides, what a student does outside of school has no part in what the student does while in school. Also, its not the student's fault that others are copying his work.
This accusation is completely ridiculous. I’m pretty sure that when you do tests, you're not allowed to have a computer beside you. And how can you cheat on an assignment? That's only possible if you plagiarise. And I think that these university students already know the possible consequences of it.
This is how Facebook can have many purposes. It can be educational or social. It’s just a matter of how students utilize use the site.

Entry #3: When Graphic Artists Get Bored...

So, it is said that graphic artists like to take random pictures and have fun with them by using Photoshop. Apparently they are funny and able to think outside the box.
I think the most interesting picture was the one with the person who has cars for feet. I really like this image because it is a metaphor for how people use cars. it shows the people use cars as if they were your feet. As if we need them to move around in the city or wherever you live. As if there are no other options to get where we want to go. It shows that people would rather take the easy way out rather than have to do things the hard way, where you actually learn something while doing these actions.
I think this image was really easy to create, and the effects were easy to achieve. I think the artist took pictures of the car, and a picture of a person's ankles and feet. Then they put each picture on a separate layer. The artist would then copy the car and paste it onto the same layer. Then, they would take one of the cars, and distort it to fit onto the person's foot. But first they would have to magic erase the person's actual feet. They would then do the same with the other car. Then, the artist would have to clone stamp the shadows so that it looks realistic. After that they would probably just blur the parts where the pants and the car connect. I think that's basically how the artist created their hybrid image.

Entry #2: Music Mania Downloads

It seems that everyone these days has an iPod or mp3 to listen to. But where do they get the music to put on their music players? Simple. They download it. Some people may think well hey, downloading is stealing. But don't you think it’s justified? I mean, people have to pay for everything else in their lives. Why not give them something for free? Besides, these celebrities have all the money they could ever want. But they don’t do anything to give back to society. Sure, they help raise money for charities, but they never actually make a donation. And it's not like they’re losing anything. They’re still getting the publicity they want. Some parents don't even allow their children to download anything because it is "illegal."
When you buy a CD, you might only like a few songs off the album. So paying for the whole CD just to listen to a few songs would be a waste of money. Downloading is just the faster way to get the music you want. And if it really was illegal, the police would be cracking down on it a lot more wouldn’t they? But that's assuming that they will actually do their jobs for once.
Now, let's talk about software and software packages. All these products are so incredibly expensive. The creators should know that people would rather download it for free rather than have to pay a ridiculous price. If they actually cared that people download, they would lower their prices so that we could pay for their products. That way they would actually make money. The truth is, these people expect that we will download their merchandise. They just want something to complain about.
Hmmm, how do I feel about downloading for free? I don’t have any problem with it. I think it's fine. These celebrities have loads of money already. Why not let people save their's? If you can get something with just one click of a mouse, wouldn't you rather do that instead of having to go all the way to the mall? Besides, you'd be saving the environment by not driving your car.

Entry #1: Your Footprint

Everyone seems to be worried about Global Warming these days. To reduce the impact and lengthen the time we have until this happens, people can calculate their ecological footprint. This way, people will know how big their footprint is, and how they can reduce it.
I have been a vegetarian for over a year now, so i wasn't surprised when the website said "18% of all greenhouse gas emissions are associated with meat consumption." My ecological footprint is 3.07. In order to reduce it, I need to eat more organic foods and choose more sustainable building materials, household cleaning products and furnishings. That goes on top of all the things that I already do to save energy and the environment.
I think this website is very helpful because it give tips on how to reduce our impact on the environment. It also gives information about global warming and its effects. The layout also attracts your attention by using bright, but not intense colours. It makes you want to look at the page and the information that's on it.
I think that if everyone used this website to calculate their footprint, they would realize the magnitude of their actions that affect the Earth and its people. If they used this website, global warming might be as important as it was maybe 20 years ago.
